How to Prepare for an Online Job Interview in Canada
An online interview is a job interview by video or telephone. You can prepare by rehearsing truthful examples from your experience, testing the equipment, and understanding the next step. You do not need to buy anything to use this guide.
Start with the actual job posting
Underline three real duties in the job posting. Find a truthful example for each from work, training, volunteering, or a personal project. Avoid claiming certifications or experience you do not have.
Practise using STAR
Answer one question with Situation, Task, Action and Result: what happened, your responsibility, what you actually did, and the observable result. Keep it concise and specific.
Test your connection and backup
Confirm the time zone, meeting link, contact number, and whether video is required. Charge your device, test microphone and camera if needed, and choose a quiet location. In low-bandwidth areas, ask whether a telephone alternative is possible.
Rehearse for 15 minutes
Spend five minutes introducing yourself, five presenting a STAR example, and five answering a problem-solving question. Write down improvements. Do not read out private identifiers or show confidential documents.
Close and follow up
Ask what success in the position looks like and when you can expect news. Afterward, record what questions were asked and what you would explain differently. Preparation never guarantees a job offer.
Fictional worked example
Fictional rehearsal: A team needed deliveries sorted (Situation). I was assigned labelled supplies (Task). I checked a list and organized them with my supervisor (Action). The next handoff was clearer (Result). Replace this with something you genuinely did.
